Vacuuming is the best way to maintain the cleanliness of your floors between professional cleanings. It is recommended by experts to vacuum at least once per week in low-traffic areas, twice per week in high-traffic areas, and to vacuum any dry soil such as crumbs, tracked-in dirt, or excess animal hair on a daily basis. This is especially important for wall-to-wall carpet, area rugs, and upholstery.

Any materials within a home act as air filters, accumulating dust, dirt, and even germs and bacteria. When these are permitted to build up, that’s when the fibers become visibly filthy. But with so many options for vacuum cleaners, how do you know which one is the best to keep your home clean and fresh?

Here are the top five rated vacuum cleaners:

1. Shark Vertex DuoClean PowerFins Cordless Stick Vacuum

Rated on Amazon at 4.5 stars and The Spruce at 4.8 stars, this vacuum cleaner has high suction abilities, is lightweight and easy to handle, and is also sleek enough to get under off-the-ground furniture such as beds and tables. It is approved for all types of flooring surfaces, is cordless, and has a battery life of about 60 minutes.

The only con is that the collection container is a little small – needs to be emptied after each use if not during use. Thankfully it is easy to empty which allows you to keep going to get the job done quickly.

2. Dyson V11 Animal Vacuum

U.S. News rated this vacuum at 4.2 stars and on Amazon, it is standing strong at 4.5 stars. This is another sleek, cordless, vacuum much like the Shark sitting at #1. These types of vacuums are recommended because they can reach underneath some furniture and are easy to maneuver into harder-to-reach areas.

The Dyson V11 has an auto-adjust suction that works for all types of flooring without you having to change any settings. It is ideal for homes with pets because of its powerful suction abilities. Another great feature is the collection container – it is easy to empty without having to touch any of the debris.

One possible con is that it is trigger-driven – meaning it will only run when holding onto the trigger. For this reason, it is ideal for smaller areas because it could become uncomfortable to hold the trigger for long periods of time.

3. Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV352

Just like the Shark Vertex and the Dyson V11, this Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV352 has a 4.5-star rating on Amazon. This vacuum differs in that it is not cordless and it is an upright rather than a sleek vacuum. Although it is upright and can be taken apart and turned into a hand-held/canister vacuum for easy access to harder-to-reach areas or for upholstery vacuuming.

In addition to being bagless, it also has a HEPA filter and an anti-allergy seal to control any dust and debris. A couple of cons is that it can be a bit bulky and difficult to take apart. It also does not have a removable brush roll which makes cleaning and maintenance a little more difficult.

4. iRobot Roomba 694 With Virtual Wall Barrier

With a 4.5 star rating on Amazon, this Roomba has several high-performing features such as sensors that not only detect its surroundings but also any dirt on the floor. It can effortlessly go from hard surface floors to carpet and has various built-in brushes for both. The edge sweeping brush also allows it to gather dirt out of corners.

The app gives you the ability to schedule cleanings from your phone and it can connect with Alexa or Google Assistant. While these vacuums can be very convenient especially for those of us with busy schedules – technology is not always reliable, there may be some obstacles and corners this vacuum doesn’t know how to get around, and it still needs to be cleaned out regularly.

5. Eureka Airspeed Ultra-Lightweight Compact Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Also coming in at 4.5 stars on Amazon, this lightweight upright vacuum is only 7.7 pounds! Some other features are its powerful suction for both carpet and hard-surface flooring, the detachable handle that can be used for hard-to-reach areas, and a washable reusable filter. Although this vacuum is highly rated and more cost-conscious, it is not cordless, has a smaller container that needs to be emptied frequently, and may not be efficient on thick carpets.
