The Importance of Professional Upholstery Cleaning

Upholstered furniture such as sofas, recliners, dining room chairs, and mattresses may experience a range of dust, dirt, and germ accumulation depending on usage. Even rarely used furniture will accumulate dust over time. In order to keep your upholstered furniture looking, smelling, and feeling fresh, it is important to have regular, professional, upholstery cleaning.

Rid Your Home of Harmful Allergens and Bacteria

Any material within our homes, such as carpet, rugs, and upholstery, act as giant air filters trapping allergens, bacteria, and other particles. Just like with any filter, your carpet, rugs, and upholstery become full. Additionally, every time we use our upholstered furniture, we unknowingly leave behind microscopic dirt, skin cells, and body oils. With more frequent use, these elements begin to build on each other creating wear and tear as well as dirt and oil spots.

This is where having your upholstery cleaned at least once or twice per year will help rid your home of excess dirt, dust, and germs, and extend the life of your furniture. If you have pets and/or young children, having your upholstery cleaned even more frequently will benefit the health of your home and your family.

Professional Upholstery Cleaning Method

Most professional cleaning experts recommend using a hot water extraction method for upholstery cleaning. This method includes spraying on a preconditioner that helps to break down the dirt, dust, and oil accumulated deep within the upholstery. Then, using a specialized cleaning vacuum, hot water is sprayed into the upholstery (at an adjustable pressure depending on material) and immediately extracted out along with the accumulated dirt, dust, and oil.

It takes approximately six to twelve hours for upholstery to completely dry. Directly after a cleaning, upholstery fibers are more likely to absorb anything that touches them – it is recommended to avoid the upholstery for up to 24 hours in order to lessen the risk of accidents and stains. Having good airflow is highly recommended after any professional cleaning using the hot water extraction method. During and after a professional cleaning, make sure to leave your ceiling fans running, the A/C fan set to “on,” and if the weather permits, some windows open. The more airflow throughout your home, the faster your upholstery will dry.
