Have you searched online for carpet cleaning lately? Maybe you just did since you’re reading this article. Are you shocked at how many options you have between companies and the type of cleaning that is used? The most common is hot water extraction or better known as steam cleaning. Before any water is applied, the technician should pretreat any stains and spots, then spray a pretreatment solution to the carpet to help loosen ground in dirt. A reputable cleaning company will use truck-mounted equipment that injects water between 180 and 250 degrees into the carpet under pressure. The high temperature of the water kills bacteria, dust mites and odors while extracting the dirt out of the carpet. Drying time should be around 4-6 hours, not 12-24 or longer. Companies that use outdated or inferior equipment can leave excess water and soap in the carpet, allowing a breeding ground for mildew. In addition, leaving soap behind will end up attracting more dirt – making it look as dirty, if not dirtier than before the carpet was cleaned.
When considering carpet cleaning companies, you also need to consider pricing. There are many companies out there that lure you with extremely low prices. When the technician arrives, you are told that pre-treatment and spot removal will be additional charges and your “cheap” price is now quite costly. If you decline the extra charges, you’re left with wet carpet…not clean carpet. The company you invite into your home should be able to give you an estimate based on your square footage and number of stairs.
The internet is a wonderful tool allowing you to search companies, read reviews and find a reputable company that will clean your carpet correctly the first time. Take the time to find a company with good reviews, is licensed and insured, has an affiliation with an industry trade association and offers a guarantee. For carpet cleaning, the two trade associations are Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) or The Carpet and Rug Institute.
